Euro 2016 History

History of the UEFA European Championship (Euro 2016)

The idea to form a pan-European football tournament was first suggested by Henri Delaunauy , the French Football Federation's secretary, in 1927; however, the tournament officially started in 1958, three years after he died. The first tournament was held in 1960: 17 teams competed, out of which 4 reached the finals, and it was won by the Soviet Union. With the growing popularity and prestige of the competition, in 1980 it was expanded to 8 teams, in 1996 it was expanded to 16 teams and in 2016, 24 teams will compete.

Greatest Scorers in Euro Championship History

The greatest scorer in the tournament's history is Michel Platini, a former player for France, who has scored a total of 9 goals in 5 matches.

Memorable Moments in UEFA European Championship History

Here are several moments in the Champions League history no football fan will ever forget:
  • France wins a double: In the year 2000, France became the first team to win both the Euro and the World Cup (which it won two years earlier, in 1998). This amazing achievement is credited to legendary player Zinadine Zidane.
  • Greece takes Europe by surprise: In the 2004 tournament, Greece did the unbelievable – after winning a match against Portugal in their opening game, the two teams met again in the final, and Greece won again. It was the country's first ever victory in the UEFA European Championship.
  • Italy wins by a coin toss: In 1968, Italy and the Soviet Union competed against each other in the semi-final. The game reached a 0-0 draw and even during extra time, no goals were scored. Therefore, the teams tossed a coin, which determined Italy to be the winner.
