Rivalries

Main Rivals

  • Manchester United:
The rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United is one of the biggest rivalries in professional soccer worldwide.
The rivalry goes back to the 1900s when the teams first faced each other but it really heated up in the 1960s and is the strongest today.
The clubs are only 35 mile apart from each other and are both the most popular and highest earning teams in all of soccer.

Minor Rivals

  • Chelsea:
Liverpool’s rivalry with Chelsea is relatively young and started with Chelsea’s recent rise in prominence.
In the 2002-03 season, Chelsea unexpectedly knocked Liverpool out of contention for a Champion League qualification, which made them a viable threat. Since then, a feud began, including a personal feud between previous managers Rafael Benitez and Jose Mourinho.
  • Everton:
The rivalry between Liverpool and Everton is one of the most heated and physical rivalries in English soccer.
Matches between these two teams have had more red cards awarded than any other matchup in Premier League history.
Their matchup is known as the Merseyside Derby and the rivalry began in the 1890s when Liverpool took over Everyton’s old home stadium.
