Review of Liverpool squad in the 2016-17 season

The 2016-17 season is the 125th season for the Liverpool squad at present as well as their 54th consecutive season in English football. Plus, it is the 25th consecutive season of the club in the English Premier League. Besides the Premier League, the club will also compete in the EFL Cup and the FA cup this season. The current season of the Liverpool squad started from July 2016 and is due to end on July 2017.

Pre-season

Liverpool started their pre-season on July 8 at the Tranmere Rovers. In their first match in this season, Danny Ings scored the only goal for the club, while winning the match with a score of 1 to 0. Liverpool played its last International Champions Cup game against Barcelona at the Wemberley Stadium on August 6. It won in its final game with a score of 4 to 0. The club concluded it’s pre-season the next day with a defeat of 4 to 0 at the Mainz’s Opel Arena.

August

Liverpool started the season on August 14 against Arsenal in the Emirates Stadium. The second EPL match of Liverpool in the current season was on August 20 at Burnley. In this match, Liverpool lost the match with a score of 2 to 0.

Liverpool started its pursuit of the EFL Cup against Burtom Albion at the Pirelli Stadium. In this match, Liverpool won with a score of 5 to 0. Liverpool then played at Tottenham on August 27 in the league, which ended in a draw with a score of 1 to 1.

September

Liverpool hosted Leicester City, the defending champions at Anfield on September 10 after their international break. This match saw the largest crowd in Anfield since 1977 with a sell-out of 54,000 in this newly-expanded stadium.

Liverpool then played against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on September 16 and won this match with a score of 2 for 1. Furthermore, Liverpool played at the iPro against Derby in the EFL cup’s third round on September 20 in which they won with a score of 3 to 0.

October

Liverpool played against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on October 1 and won with a score of 2 to 1. Then, Liverpool played against Manchester United on October 17 at Anfield, which ended in a draw with a score of 0 to 0.

Furthermore, Liverpool played against West Brom on October 22 at Anfield. And, they won this match with a score of 2 to 1. Then, Liverpool played against Tottenham on October 25 at Anfield, which was the EFL cup’s fourth round.  The club played its final match in October on October 29 at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace.

November

On November 6, Liverpool played at Anfield against Watford. The Reds defeated Watford with a score of 6 to 1, with Georginio Wijnaldum scoring the club’s first goal. As a result, Liverpool came at the top of the Premier League for the first time since May 2014. On November 19, Liverpool played against Southampton after their international break at the St Mary’s. The match finished in a draw with a score of 0 to 0.
