Manchester United History

Manchester United – Background

Manchester United was formed in 1878 by a department in the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, as Newton Heath LYR Football Club. It entered the First Division in 1892-93 and changed its name to Manchester United in 1902. The team won the first of its League titles in 1908, but the next several decades were less fortunate as Manchester United nearly reached bankruptcy, and was relegated to the Second Division, where it reached a very low position. In the late 1940s the team bounced back, winning the FA Cup in 1948 and the First Division in 1952. In 1957 Manchester United became the first team to play in the European Cup. A year later disaster occurred, as a plane carrying the team crashed, killing eight players. The 1960s were dedicated to rebuilding the team, which resulted in success: Manchester United won the League in 1965 and 1967; and in 1968 it became the first English team to win the European Cup. During the 1970s, the team had weakened, only to return with full force in the 1980 and 1990s, especially after the appointment of Sir Alex Ferguson as manager. It won its first Cup Winners Cup in 1991; and a "double" (the League and the FA Cup) in 1993. In 1998-99 it won a "treble" – the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League. A string of wins followed, in Britain, in Europe and internationally. The team won the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup, and won a record 19th league title in 2011-12. Since then it has won the League title once again, in 2012-13.
