Monte Carlo History

History of the masters 1000 Monte Carlo

The Monte-Carlo Masters was officially founded in 1897. At that period, the tournament was dominated by English and European players, and the first player to win the inaugural event was Reggie Doherty of the U.K. During World War I (1914-1919) the tournament was suspended, but it was resumed afterwards. 1968 was the first time that professional tennis players were allowed to compete in the tournament; this change drew many big names in tennis to participate in the event. Swedish player Bjorn Borg won the tournament in 1977, 1979 and 1980. Swiss star player Roger Federer never won the Monte-Carlo Masters, but reached the finals from 2006 to 2008. The most successful player in the event in its modern era has been the Spanish Rafael Nadal, who has won 8 titles consecutively from 2005 to 2012. In 2006, Monte-Carlo Masters celebrated its 100th anniversary. More than 100,000 people attended the event.  In 2007, the ATP Tour tried to downgrade to tournament by lowering its status and prize money. Many players protested against this, and the tournament organizers sued the ATP. However, the suit was dropped as the sides reached a compromise: the Monte-Carlo Masters would remain a Masters 1000 event with the same status and prize money; however, it would not have the mandatory player commitments required by other Masters events. In 2009, Monte-Carlo Masters became the only tournament of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 not to have a mandatory player commitment. However, top players still choose to compete in the event.
