Chelsea FC History

Chelsea – Background

Chelsea F.C. was founded in 1905 when Gus Mears acquired the Stamford Bridge stadium in London and decide to form his own sports club and call it after the nearby borough of Chelsea. In its first years, Chelsea was promoted to the First Division and became quite popular. However, the club didn't become very successful until the 1950s, under the management of Ted Drake who improved its training regime and signed new players. In 1954-55 the team won its first League championship. However, the next few years were less successful, and the team's next achievement arrived only a decade later, when it won the League Cup in 1964-65. Chelsea's first European win was the UEFA Cup in 1971. From the late seventies to the early nineties, Chelsea went through a chaotic period due to financial difficulties and trouble caused by a violent group of its supporters.  Only in the late 1990s did the team finally see a string of victories: it won the FA Cup in 1997; the League, the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup in 1998; and the FA Cup in 2000. In 2004, José Mourinho became Chelsea's manager, which proved to be a great success. He led the team to two consecutive Premier League victories, in 2004-05 and 2005-06, two League Cups (2005 and 2007) and an FA Cup in 2007. In the following years, Chelsea's success continued, as it won an FA Cup in 2009, a double cup (Premier League and FA) in 2009-10, an FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League in 2012, and the Premier League, the League Cup and the UEFA Europa League in 2013. In April 2016, Antonio Conte replaced José Mourinho as Chelsea's manager.

It also won the FA Cup seven times (most recently in 2011-12); the Football League Cup five times (most recently in 2014-15; the FA Community Shield four times (most recently in 2009); the Full Members Cup two times (most recently in 1989-90); and the FA Youth Cup six times (most recently in 2015-16).

Titles Won in Europe

Chelsea won the UEFA Champions League once (in 2011-12); the UEFA Europa League once (in 2012-13); the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup twice (most recently in 1997-98); and the UEFA Youth League once (in 2014-15).

Chelsea's Most Successful Period

Chelsea's most successful period is the last decade, from Mourinho's first appointment as team manager in 2004, until today (his second period as manager of the group). In this period, the team won more titles and cups in Britain and in Europe than it had in any previous period in its career.
