AC Milan History

AC Milan – Background

One of the most successful football clubs both in Italy and globally, AC Milan was formed in 1899 by two expatriate Englishmen as the Milan Cricket and Football Club (it later dropped its cricket section). It won its first trophy, the Medaglia del Re (King's Medal) in 1900, and proceeded to win the League in 1901, 1906 and 1909. The team's name was changed in 1939 under the fascist regime to Associazione Calcio Milano; this name was dropped after WWII, but adopted again later, with "Milano" changed back to "Milan". From 1947-48 to 1956-57 the club always placed among the first three teams in Italy, winning the Seria A several times during this period. In 1962-63 Milan was the first Italian team to win the European Cup. The second European Cup arrived in 1968-69 and in 1969 the team also won its first Intercontinental Cup. The 1970s and 1980s proved to be a rather dry period for the team, with few achievements as well as involvement in a match-fixing scandal. However, under the management of Arrigo Sacchio, the team bounced back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, winning the League in 1988 and then three consecutive times from 1991 to 1993; as well as European and Intercontinental cups in 1989 and 1990. The late 1990s were less successful but the team shone once again in 2003, when it won a League and Champions League double; and in 2007 when they won the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. Since, the team has fared rather badly in Europe and abroad, though still managing to win the Serie A and the Suppercoppa Italiana in 2011.

Titles won in Italy

Milan won the Serie A 18 times (most recently in 2010-11), the Seria B 2 times (most recently in 1983), the Coppa Italiana 5 times (most recently in 2002-03) and the Suppercoppa Italiana a record 6 times (most recently in 2011).

Titles Won in Europe

Milan won the UEFA Champions League 7 times (most recently in 2006-07), the UEFA Cup Winners Cup 2 times (most recently in 1972-73) and the UEFA Super Cup a record 5 times. Internationally, the team has won the Interconental Cup a record 3 times (most recently in 1990) and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2007.

AC Milan's Most Successful Period

So far, the team's golden period seems to have been the early to mid-1990s, with its numerous wins of the Serie A, as well as several impressive wins in the Supercoppa Italiana, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.
