Real Madrid History

Real Madrid – Background

Real Madrid, the most valuable sports team in the world and one of the most successful and popular teams globally, was founded in 1902. Its original name was Madrid Football Club. The team won its first title in 1905 – the Spanish Cup. The team's name was changed to Real Madrid after King Alfonso XIII of Spain granted it the title "Royal" (Real) in 1920. In 1931-32 the team won the Spanish League for the first time, and won it again the following year. In 1943, the team won the Copa del Generalissimo, beating Barcelona. The 1950s were a busy time for Real Madrid: its stadium and training facilities were being rebuilt after the devastation caused by Spanish Civil War, and its youth academy, La Fábrica, was founded. In addition, club president Santiago Bernabéu Yeste and colleagues created what would eventually become the UEFA Champions League, an exhibition tournament of teams invited from Europe. The period of the 1950s to the 1970s were a very successful period for the team, as it won the European Cup five consecutive times between 1956-1960 and a sixth time in 1966; as well as five league championships and three Spanish Cups during the 1970s. The second half of the 1980s marked another period of success for the team as it won two UEFA Cups, one Spanish cup, three Spanish Super Cups and five Spanish championships. In 1998, Real Madrid won its seventh European Cup. In the beginning of the 2000s, the club signed several star players who came to be known as the Galácticos, among them Ronaldo, David Beckham, Zinédine Zidane, Luís Figo, Roberto Carlos, Raúl and Fabio Cannavaro. This looked as a safe bet at first, when the team proceeded to win an Intercontinental Cup and the UEFA Champions League in 2002, as well as the League in 2003. However, the team's achievements in the next three seasons were disappointing. Things picked up in 2007, when the team won La Liga. The following years marked more success as Real Madrid won La Liga for the 32nd time in 2011-12, a record in the La Liga history. In 2012-13 the team won the Supercopa de España as well as the Copa del Rey. In 2014 the team won the UEFA Champions League, becoming the first team to win 10 European Cups; as well as the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. In 2016 Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League for the 11th time. In that same year, renowned Galáctico Zinedine Zidanne became the team's manager.

The team won the UEFA Cup twice, in 1984-85 and 1985-86 and the UEFA Super Cup three times, in 2002, 2014 and 2016. Internationally, the team won the Intercontinental Cup three times (most recently in 2002) and the FIFA World Cup twice, in 2014 and 2016.

Real Madrid's Most Successful Period

To date, Real Madrid has had two highly successful periods in its career, the 1980s with many titles in Spain and in Europe; and the 2000s, with its international successes led by the Galácticos.
